Ok, I know this may seem ridiculously trivial to some, but I can't let this one go:

Last Century, it was:

1901: nineteen - one
1910: nineteen - ten
1911: nineteen - eleven
1999: nineteen - ninty nine

During the first decade of the 2000's it was:

2001: two thousand -one
2002: two thousand - two
2009: tow thousand - nine

probably because saying 'twenty-one' for 2001, too easily confused with 21.

Now in 2010,

a lot of people are still referring to this year as 'two thousand-ten' and not simply calling it 'twenty-ten'.

How much longer will it take for us to finally start calling (as in years & centuries past) the upcoming years as:

2010: twenty - ten
2011: twenty - eleven
2012: twenty - twelve
2020: twenty - twenty

Your thoughts?

I use both... it doesn't present a problem for me.

Cassp: when in casual conversation, do you 'use all of these' when referring to a year in the 1900's too?

'nineteen-hundred ninety-eight'
'one-thousand nine-hundred ninety-eight'

or simply:

'nineteen - ninety-eight'

I wrote a term paper in college about the novel "1984". I remember thinking that if I lived that long, my useful life would be over. I couldn't even imagine a year 2000.
So the past 26 years have been all "gravy" for me!
I don't care what you call it, like Minnie Pearl, I'm just "so proud to be here".

Scott - I feel the 1900s sound and feel different than the 21st century numbers. Of course 19-98 number sounds better as pronounced as two two-digit numbers, nineteen ninety-eight. The 2000 numbers, on the other hand, can't be twenty hundred, but two thousand, or just 20 - thus the difference in handling the new digits. I guess from this point on we (USAers) will tend toward the 20-11, 20-20, 20-45 usage, but the 2000-11, 2000-20, 2000-45 nomenclature does not seem awkward and will probably stick around in some shape or form. BUT, as the Eagles so nicely put it, "Get over it!"

Happy New Year, friend.

When I see the year 1901, I see (say) it as
Nineteen-Oh-One not Nineteen One.

As for 2011, I like both equally and will use both. -charley

2-eleven

By the time 2-eleven means 2211 we'll all be long gone so there's no worry about confusion.
